The Dubai World Cup History
The Dubai World Cup is a thoroughbred race held annually since its inception in 1996 at the Meydan Racecourse, Dubai. This event was created by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, an international leader in thoroughbred breeding and horse racing.
This racing event offers a total of nine races, 8 thoroughbred races and one purebred Arabian racing event. The event is always held on the last Saturday of March, and has had a purse of $10 million since 2010, and had only recently been surpassed in the size of its purse in 2017 by the Pegasus World Cup. (Will the Dubai World Cup let this stand – we will see).
The Dubai World Cup is a Group 1 flat race, with a distance of 2,000 metres, held on a dirt track with Northern Hemisphere thoroughbred 4 year olds and up, and Southern Hemisphere thoroughbred three year olds and up.
The winner of the first event in 1996 was the thoroughbred horse Cigar, a US hall of fame horse and the 2017 winner was US born horse Arrogate, ridden by jockey Mike E Smith.
